From Tee Boxes to Sky Boxes
Jacksonville is an absolute sports mecca, with college and professional teams to satisfy a diversity of passions. Playoff contenders in 2006, the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars are a Sunday staple in Northeast Florida, drawing tens of thousands to the downtown riverfront and ALLTEL Stadium, site of Super Bowl XXXIX.
College sporting events also take center stage, including the annual Toyota Gator Bowl, ACC Championship football and baseball, and one of college football’s biggest rivalries, the Florida-Georgia game. Summertime brings baseball and the minor league Jacksonville Suns games are a hot spot for young professionals and families.
Northeast Florida is home to the PGA TOUR headquarters and the World Golf Hall of Fame. Golfers can sharpen their games at one of more than 70 courses in the region or follow the best at THE PLAYERS Championship, held annually at TPC Sawgrass. Amelia Island plays host to The Bausch & Lomb Tennis Championship and is also the headquarters of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).
Recently ranked one of the fittest cities in the United States, Jacksonville is home to an active community of runners, who always relish the challenge of crossing the Hart Bridge at the annual Gate River Run.
Adventure greets every outdoorsman who calls Jacksonville home. Our moderate year-round climate and access to the Atlantic Ocean and the St. Johns River continually afford residents the opportunity to experience the outdoors for exercise and recreation. Miles of beach skirt Jacksonville to the east, providing ample opportunities for surfing, beach volleyball, swimming and relaxing.
The longest river in Florida stretches north right through the downtown urban center, making fishing a popular sport, including the Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament, the largest of its kind in the country.
